The Benefits of CBD for Skin Health and Aging By Dr. Carolyn Catchings, AMP 1. Introduction to CBD CBD, or cannabidiol, is one of over 100 active cannabinoids found in the hemp plant. It is the most abundant cannabinoid in the Cannabis sativa plant and constitutes up to 40% of the plant extract. Hemp is a strain of C. sativa that contains less than 0.3% tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive cannabinoid found in marijuana. In recent years, CBD has gained a great deal of attention for its numerous potential health benefits, particularly for its effects on the skin. Research suggests that CBD may play a role in regulating the endocannabinoid system in the body, a complex cell-signaling system involved in maintaining physiological and cognitive homeostasis (Gęgotek et al., 2019). The human body has two types of cannabinoid receptors: CB1, primarily found in the brain and nervous system; and CB2 receptors, mostly found in peripheral organs and cells associated with the immune system. Polymorphisms in genes encoding components of the ECS are linked with a variety of diseases, from cardiovascular disorders to obesity. The ECS is also essential to skin physiology, and cannabinoids, such as CBD, may influence this regulation through the integration of different environmental and cellular signals. 2. Understanding Skin Aging Skin aging stems from a natural loss of cellular and structural components that maintain skin tension. Such deterioration compromises the protective barrier and makes the skin more susceptible to oxidative damage (He et al., 2024). The visible signs of skin aging include wrinkles, hidebound epidermis, pigment disorder, loss of elasticity, and altered microtextures (Li et al., 2022). External factors such as ultraviolet (UV) radiation and air pollution exacerbate the process, whereas impairment of the skin barrier and inflammatory infiltration also cause accelerated aging.
